I actually tried a salad from our local Subway last spring and I got sick. I figured the lettuce was bad,but I had not considered the cross contamination.............Must consider that. I suppose if you religiously watch their every move, you might ensure there's no x-contamination.....I'd rather not risk it. I hadn't gotten sick off resturant food in years before then.

I have been to 3 different Subway shops in South Texas this Winter and not 1 shop knew what I was talking about! Nice job Subway! Get the "word" out to your Subway stores and carry thru with what you advertize!

Subways in Dallas now have gluten free bread. Had my first sandwich since contracting Celiac disease five years ago. Life is sweet.

I was recently placed on a gluten free diet. My partner is actually a manager for Subway and I assure you, in Macon, GA., they are aware of this and are making every effort to inform and educate their employees. I also want to point out that the employee also has to care about their job and well we all know how that goes. But unless you write your local franchise owner then they will not be aware of the problem. Just walk in an ask for the owners name and number. Also, you can contact their corporate office, because really it has to come from the top anyway..Hope that helps.

Nellie,

I think you make a great point about cross-contamination.

I have four Subways within four blocks of where I work. You would think a company that big would educate employees and put a little effort into a gluten free menu, but I suppose cross contamination will always be a problem. They are about as big as McDonald's these days.

Thanks for the comment!

Interesting...however I would be EXTREMELY concerned with cross-contamination issues. Also, I wonder how educated Subway really is about gluten-free diets.
We all know deli meats (especially cheaper kinds) are a very common source for hidden gluten, but I wouldn't be so sure Subway would know that. Personally, I would never eat at a sandwich place that doesn't train/educate their staff, is fully knowledgeable about the subject, and makes loaves of bread within a small space all day...
