One of the most popular sandwich chains in the world is Subway.   Of course, when you think sub sandwiches, the first thing you’ll probably think of is bread….gluten filled bread.   I admit I was a little shocked when my research showed that Subway actually does have some gluten free foods.

If you visit Subway’s menu page, you’ll find an Allergy Chart that you can download.  Obviously the bread/buns are out, but many of the salads can be gluten free. With the exceptions of the the Seafood Sensation, Meatball Marinara, and Sweet Onion Teriyaki Chicken, all the other salads are safe.  Just make sure you tell them to hold the croutons.  Oh, and as for the salad dressings, the only one with gluten is the “Atkins Sweet as Honey Mustard.”

Do you find that you often eat at Subway?

  1. Interesting…however I would be EXTREMELY concerned with cross-contamination issues. Also, I wonder how educated Subway really is about gluten-free diets.
We all know deli meats (especially cheaper kinds) are a very common source for hidden gluten, but I wouldn’t be so sure Subway would know that. Personally, I would never eat at a sandwich place that doesn’t train/educate their staff, is fully knowledgeable about the subject, and makes loaves of bread within a small space all day…

  2. Nellie,

I think you make a great point about cross-contamination.

I have four Subways within four blocks of where I work. You would think a company that big would educate employees and put a little effort into a gluten free menu, but I suppose cross contamination will always be a problem. They are about as big as McDonald’s these days.

    Thanks for the comment!
